A little something worth getting up early for.
There is something about cinnamon rolls that feels like a slow morning. You know where the house is still quiet, the coffee is hot, and there is nowhere you need to be quite yet.
Maybe that is why I love making them.
When I started working on these rolls, I knew I wanted something familiar, but I also wanted them to have a little something that made them mine.
Warm cinnamon. Brown sugar. Butter. Soft sourdough.
All the things you expect when you pull apart a cinnamon roll and find those gooey layers tucked inside.
And orange.

Not an orange roll. Not something overwhelmingly citrusy. Just fresh orange worked right into the dough with a hint of orangep, enough to brighten all those warm flavors without taking them over.
Then comes the cinnamon and brown sugar filling, tucked into every swirl.
And finally, the glaze.
Warm spice and orange come together again on top, melting down into the rolls while they’re still warm.
The result is a cinnamon roll that tastes familiar at first, but there’s this little brightness running all the way through it.
And somewhere along the way, they earned their name.
Cinnamon Sunrise Rolls.
Warm cinnamon, fresh orange, sourdough, and a whole lot of goodness tucked into those swirls.
Exactly the kind of thing I want sitting beside a cup of coffee while the morning wakes up around me.
I love recipes with stories. Some are handed down through generations. Some are scribbled onto cards by grandmothers and tucked into recipe boxes. Some come from friends, neighbors, cookbooks, and kitchens we’ve been lucky enough to sit in.
And some start with an idea.
You make it.
Change something.
Make it again.
Add something you hadn’t planned on adding.
Taste it.
And eventually, you stop fiddlin’ with it because you’ve perfected it.
That’s what happened with these.
The Cinnamon Sunrise Rolls became one of those recipes that feels like it belongs in our kitchen.
And now I’m letting them wander out onto the porch.
